March 3 question - Everyone has a favorite genre or genres to write. But what about your reading preferences? Do you read widely or only within the genre(s) you create stories for? What motivates your reading choice?
I read widely. I'm interested in many things and will read whatever piques my interest. I do have favorite genres to read. Fantasy, Science fiction, Historical top the list. I read books by Native American authors when I can find them.
My motivation for my reading choices is dependent on my mood, the time I have for reading, book covers, book blurbs, upon occasion a review on TV or blog, or Good Reads. Sometimes, it comes as a result of my searching for something else entirely, i.e. the black hole lying in wait for the unwary when one is desperately hunting for something to cook, write about, or any number of everyday chore lightening methods.

I agree with you. My mood definitely affects my reading choice. Sometimes I can't fathom another strong heroine and need a change!

Oh yeah, I have a few books I read just for the sheer pleasure of being in another world. I don't reread these too often.

As my sons like to say "Searching for what? a recipe for disaster?" whenever my turn to provide supper is late or worse, burnt.
DeleteI also read widely, usually in phases, especially if there are several books in a series. I've also found many an interesting read when I'm researching and have fallen down the research rabbit hole. But I love finding something I wouldn't have sought out on my own.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it's exciting at times. Sometimes, I dance about proclaiming the bit of something I found out. Family mostly smiles and goes about their business. Once in a blue moon, they're inspired to find out for themselves.
DeleteI agree. My reading preference often depends upon my mood at the time. It may also depend upon how much time I have to spend. :)

DeleteIn college I took a course in Native American Studies. I read BLACK ELK SPEAKS. It was more accessible than I expected. I doubt I could name any other NA authors besides Sherman Alexie, though.
